Though he lived in Cornwall from 1948 until his death in 1984. he had well over a hundred books published including novels,short story collections and 26 autobiographical books.
With the aid of slides Martin Val Baker remembers his father's adventures as a writer,editor and family man.

Ralf Bird: A victorian Trip Down the River Fal.

 

Wednesday 28th May, 6.30pm

This slide show tells the story of the River Fal and how it has changed over the last one hundred years from a working river to one of leisure. Our story starts in Truro and ends in Falmouth, pointing out places of interest on the way with many ships and other vessels associated with the river. Also featured are the passenger steamers that piloted the river. The River Fal is also well known for the many ships laid up in its upper reaches. At times before and after the second world war there were as many as seventy war and cargo ships laid up in the river.

Writing the River Within - Creative writing workshop

This workshop is open to new and experienced writers and will provide opportunities to explore the image of the river in poetry and prose. Rivers offer rich metaphorical and narrative possibilities and we will also use the beautiful River Fal as a source of inspiration. Victoria Field lives in Falmouth where she works as a writer, poetry therapist and publisher. Places on the workshop are limited.
